In Carry Across Madihe Gharibi works in dialogue with women potters in the village of Kalpourgan in Iran. Kalpourgan is a women-led village located in the Sistan and Baluchistan province, in the southeastern region of Iran, renowned as a living pottery museum. The tradition of pottery in Kalpourgan dates back 7000 years, and women still create pottery out of dust and mud, using only their hands, employing the same techniques handed down by their ancestors. Through the art of pottery, these women have achieved financial independence within a male-dominated society.
In August 2023 some artifacts from Kalpourgan were carried across to be shown in Bergen. What is lost by the translation of such a cultural phenomenon, and what is this loss replaced by? In Time will tell, she already does, Madihe Gharibi explores the passing on of knowledge and the important different aspects of translation, either contextual, cultural or personal.

Stilla In Carry Across
As part of the project, Madihe Gharibi and Sanne Frostensson did the event Stilla at Hordaland Kunstsenter. On Sunday 29th October, during the art centre’s opening hours, they turned the gallery space into a silent space.
Stilla is a practice of silence in an artistic context. The project started by Sanne in the medieval building Nonneseter klosterkapell in Bergen in 2021. To develop the project and explore silence in an artistic context in a more direct way, Stilla move from Nonneseter to a few gallery spaces in collaboration with others. The core question of Carry Across is also what they explored by moving Stilla from Nonneseter to Hordaland Kunstsenter: “What is lost by the translation and what is this loss replaced by?”
